My Tabi - My journey

Wearing home stitched frocks, lovingly designed, stitched and embroidered by my mother is probably where the seeds were sown. I have grown up appreciating and loving all things handmade, so much so that I learnt my first crochet stitch when I was 6/7 years old and went on to put the entire family in crochet caps! This was followed by embroidering tables covers and soon I graduated to stitching clothes for my dolls and eventually for myself on the beloved Usha foot pedal machine my mother used. That machine still occupies pride of place in my office!

Pursuing an education in textiles and fashion was a natural progression and that is where all things natural and pure, be it cotton, or linen, or silk tugged at the heartstrings. The skills of Indian crafts would make the heart go aflutter like none other! The only thought was to design and make clothes using all these beautiful techniques.

Working with international clients, designing and producing clothing and home linen for them exposed me to mass production and international trade practices. . The path moved away from traditional dress form and techniques to more global ones.

One day, as I was reflecting upon the journey of my life, Tabi was born!

Tabi, the Japanese word for journey, for me symbolizes the journey of an individual through life, facing the ups and downs, the challenges, playing innumerable roles and finally coming to this happy place where one is at peace and willing to embrace slow and mindful living, where one values quality over quantity, where the things that gladden your heart are the iridescence of pearls, the grains of sand, the foggy autumn forest, the crashing waves on a foggy morning, time softened river stones, dewy greens, the wandering soul.

Come, walk with me as you find your happy place!
